What Do You Need To Bring Along?

Quite a few friends have chilled out at the lake with or without us being there and everyone asks us what they need to bring along. The answer to that question is dependent on what you want to do but here is a list of what will be at the cabin when you get there.

Appliances
  • Photo of the cabin's kitchenMicrowave
  • Refrigerator with a freezer (there are some ice cube trays there as well). Make sure you add some water to the ice cube trays as soon as you get there as it takes the fridge an evening or so to cool drinks down enough.
  • 10 cup retro coffee maker as well as a coffee/tea press.
  • A matching retro toaster.  The convection toaster does a lot of things really well, making toast is not one of them.
  • Coffee Grinder if you are bringing your coffee beans along with you.
  • Propane barbecue with tank. It also has a side burner on it. There are some wood matches inside the cabin. It also has a great looking barbecue cover.
    Convection toaster oven.
  • Two element electric range (larger element is 1000 watts, smaller is 500 watts).
  • George Foreman grill.
  • Cappuccino/Espresso machine.
  • Bottled Water and Pump :: Arlington Water isn’t that bad but we prefer Culligan water.  While we don’t have a cooler, we do have a pump that allows you to use it for great tasting drinking water.  There is also a 30 litre blue water container.  You can get water at the washrooms or at Kinney Memorial Lodge.
Kitchen wares
  • Plates, bowls, and cups for four people.
  • Cutlery for four people.
  • Four coffee mugs.
  • Four freezer mugs (make sure you toss them into the freezer when you get into the cabin).  There are a few different ice cube trays but since we have gotten the freezer mugs, we never seem to use ice cubes any more.
    Disposable plates, cups and cutlery.
  • Can opener.
  • Corkscrew. Arlington Beach is alcohol free (it's a condition of our lease) but there are other beverages that we bring up that have a cork that are non-alcoholic.
    Cookware and basic utensils.
  • Barbecue gear (including a vegetable cooker and a pizza grill).
  • Electric Kettle.
Food (in sealed containers)
  • Basic spices
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Cereal
  • Pancake/waffle mix
  • Sugar
  • Iced Tea mix
  • Tea (we don't store coffee up there)
  • Peanut Butter
There may or may not be coffee up there as no one likes stale coffee. You will need to bring your own ground coffee. Here are some tips on brewing the perfect cup of coffee.

Electronics
  • Speakers for iPod/MP3 player. There is a portable CD player at the cabin that takes AA batteries. It can read CDR's but isn't MP3 compatible.
  • There is an iPod Dock as well. It handles our 3G Nano and 1G iPod Touch perfectly well. It helps play and charge the iPods.
  • Power bar/surge protector.
  • Three interior extension cords.
  • There is wifi, internet, and a SaskTel Payphone available in the lobby of Kinney Memorial Lodge. The wifi is protected but you can ask for the key at the front desk.
There is no television at the cabin but there is a growing library.

Bedding
  • Three beds & one queen sized air mattress (The pump is in the bedroom). Two of those are 3/4 beds and the day bed is a twin.
  • There are fitted sheets, sheets, pillow cases, quilts, and pillows for three beds.
  • There is one fold out mattress on the shelf in the master bedroom.
  • The sofa turns into a bed.
  • We have a hammock ready to be hung out back between the trees.
  • There is a 10x10 foot gazebo right beside the cabin. There are three plastic Adirondack chairs and a coffee table bungee corded to the frame. Inside the cabin are an additional three adult folding lawn chairs and a kids lawn chair. There is also a picnic table with umbrella stand beside the cabin. The umbrella is in the storage room.
All of the bedding can be found in labeled plastic storage containers in the bedroom.

Sports and Recreation
  • NCAA football, soccer ball, basketball, slingshots and tennis balls are in a labeled container marked Sports. The tennis balls will be slobbery as they are for the dog. The basketball court is just down the road through the grove of trees and behind the Cymric Church.
  • An Aerobie flying disk | Way better than a frisbee although they don't float.  Mark also keeps a boomer-ring at the cabin in case you ever need to play catch with a kangaroo.
  • Lacrosse sticks and ball.
  • Kickboard
  • Skimboard :: Here is how to do it.
  • There is a container marked paper which is for lighting fires in the fire pit. If you need matches, they are in the kitchen although there should be a couple of lighters in the container
  • 10x30 Binoculars and bird watching field book
  • Telescope for some night star viewing.
  • Super Soaker water guns.
  • 3 fishing rods (there is burbot, carp, northern pike, perch, walleye, and whitefish in the lake) and a starter tackle box.
  • In case you are feeling motivated, there is a push lawn mower to do some grass trimming about the cabin. The camp does a rough cut of the lawn for cabin owners but the push mower does a good job of trimming the stuff they don't get.
  • In case you missed it in the photos, there is a swing set at the cabin as well.
  • A hammock
Housewares:
  • There is a pay washer machine available in one of the washrooms. We do have a clothes rack on the side of the cabin. There are clothes pins in the storage room and a couple of the rack.
  • We have a LED lantern, a camping lantern, and a couple of flashlights in the cabin.
  • Garbage containers and bags
  • Mouse traps | As far as we know we don't have mice but if we do... they are loaded with peanut butter.
  • Thermometer and weather station.  The thermometer is on the fridge while the weather station is in the bedroom.
  • There are some AA and AAA batteries kept up there which we toss in flashlights. There is also a battery recharger for digital cameras and other electronics up at the cabin as well.
  • Analog alarm clock can be found in the bedroom.
  • RAID | Everyone at Arlington complains about the spiders. There are a lot of them. When you walk in, you will see a couple of containers of RAID. Generally what we do is drive up, spray the RAID around the cabin, go for a walk and then come back and unload, vacuum up the dead bugs and then settle in. We have tried our best to seal up holes, cracks, and crevices. While it is better than it was, the spiders still find a way in. I don't know if it makes any difference but I spray some RAID when we leave as well.
  • Mosquito coils | We often light one of these before we go to bed at night. It stops the annoying buzz of a mosquito or fly at night. They also work really well in the gazebo.
To sum it up, you will need to bring food, coffee (if you drink it), and a cell phone (there is a pay phone in Kinney Memorial Lodge). While there is a General Store in Cymic, you can find a well stocked Big Way Foods in Strasbourg.
