Coughlan’s Mosquito Coil Holder

1851 This is kind of cool.  It’s the Coughlan’s Mosquito Coil Holder.  The first thing we do when Jordon and I do when we go up to the lake is light a mosquito coil.  While the cabin is a lot more air tight than it was when we bought it, there is still a lot of mosquitoes that get in.  Anyone who has tried to sleep while hearing the drone of a mosquito knows how annoying it can be.  Plus with the risk of West Nile Virus always present, I would prefer to keep the bugs outside the cabin.

While mosquito coils work great, they leave a mess and for about $5, Coughlan’s makes a great little holder for them.  We bought one for the gazebo and one for inside the cabin and they keep the ashes from being spread around and also it keeps the coil burning better than the stand does.  You can find them online or at your neighborhood outfitters.

A walk at the lake

On Saturday we went up the cabin for what we had expected to be the weekend.  I had been sick most of last week and by the time we got up there, all I wanted was a nap.  I had my nap, Wendy and I went for a walk and I realized that I was just getting sicker.  So we took some photos and drove back to Saskatoon after five or six hours of chilling out and having a good time.  Here are some of the photos of our walk.

The Front Porch

Jordon and I have been looking at redoing our front porch at the cabin.  We have debated adding a front deck but instead are thinking of adding a small patio that may eventually be fenced in.  We had thought about putting a bistro table set out front as a place where him and I start the morning drinking some coffee and just reading.  We then saw these Bear Chairs at Costco and thought about adding one of these.

Bear Chairs Adirondack Chairs While we really liked the look of the chairs and they were comfortable, the joining table at Costco was already coming apart. While Jordon figured he could fix it, if I am going to shell out over $140 for some chairs, I don’t want to have to fix what I am purchasing right away.

Glass End Table from Wal-Mart After thinking it over, we kept looking and found a simple metal and glass outdoor table at Wal-Mart that I really liked.  It is heavy enough that it won’t blow away during the frequent summer storms but was only $20.  We have some resin Adirondack chairs at the lake which have lasted for years and are incredibly comfortable but they are two light to handle the wind and would be blown down the lane a couple of times a year.  We looked at some chairs at Canadian Tire that Jordon liked but I didn’t and we stopped by Wal-Mart today and I saw these two chairs that I was quite fond of.

Haylea Folding Patio Chairs Haylea Stacking Patio Chairs

I am partial to the stacking chair on the right while Jordon likes the higher back folding chair on the left.  The stacking chair is only $20 while the folding chair is only $30.  With the glass end table and two chairs, we get the look and feel we want for about $80.  We saw some bistro tables and chairs for that price but they don’t look nearly so comfortable.

For only $160 we also noticed the Haylea Patio Set

While we like it a lot, it’s a little too big for the space we have.  That and we wanted to create a bit of a nook for Jordon and I, not the entire family.  We have the gazebo in the back for family times and for entertaining friends but this is just for drinking coffee and tea in the morning.

Saskatoon Bike Auction

This is only of interest for those of you from Saskatoon but the City of Saskatoon bike auction is coming up on April 3rd.  We carried Mark’s bike to and from the cabin all last summer.  The plan is to buy a cheap bike, take it to the lake and leave it there.  I may get one for Jordon as well.

Philly Steak Sandwich Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 12 ounce boneless beef top sirloin steak, cut 1 inch thick
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic-pepper seasoning
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • 2 medium red and/or green sweet peppers seeded and cut into thin strips
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced and separated into rings
  • 4 whole wheat frankfurter buns, split
  • 1/2 cup shredded reduced-fat cheddar or reduced-fat Monterey Jack cheese (2 ounces)

Directions

  1. Preheat broiler.  Trim fat from steak.  Sprinkling steak with garlic-pepper seasoning.  Place seasoned steak on the unheated steak on the unheated rack of a broiler pan.  Broil 3 to 4 inches from heat until desired doneness.  Allow 15 to 17 for rare doneness (145 degrees F) or 20 or 22 minutes for medium doneness (160 degrees F).
  2. Meanwhile, coat and unheated very large nonstick skillet with nonstick cooking spray.  Preheat skillet over medium heat.  Add sweet pepper and onion.  Cover and cook for 5 minutes.  Uncover and cook about 5 minutes more or just until tender, stirring occasionally.
  3. Place split buns on a large baking sheet.  Broil 4 to 5 inches from heat 1 to 2 minutes or until lightly toasted.  Remove bun tops from baking sheet; set aside.  Slice steak into bit-size strips.  Divide steak strips and sweet pepper mixture among bun bottoms.  Sprinkle with cheese.  Broil 4 to 5 inches from the heat for 1 to 2 minutes or until cheese is melted.  Top with bun tops.  Makes 4 servings.
